Decorating Envelopes: A Step-by-Step Guide

Transform plain envelopes into works of art with these simple techniques using supplies from your kit.

A beautifully decorated envelope sets the tone before your letter is even opened. It tells the recipient that something special awaits inside. Here's how to make your envelopes as wonderful as the letters they contain.

Before You Begin

Always write the address and return address FIRST, before decorating. Use a pen that won't smear (ballpoint works great) and make sure addresses are clearly legible—the post office needs to read them!

Technique 1: The Washi Tape Border

The simplest way to elevate an envelope:

  1. Choose 1-3 coordinating washi tapes from your kit
  2. Apply tape along the bottom edge of the envelope
  3. Layer a second tape slightly overlapping the first
  4. Add a small piece at the top corner as an accent

Pro tip: Wrap the tape around the edges for a polished look.

Technique 2: The Sticker Scatter

Create visual interest with strategic sticker placement:

  1. Start with your largest sticker in one corner
  2. Add medium stickers to create a "flow" across the envelope
  3. Fill gaps with small stickers
  4. Leave space around the address for readability

Technique 3: The Focal Point

Sometimes less is more:

  1. Choose one statement sticker or create a small cluster
  2. Place it in the bottom left corner
  3. Add a small washi tape accent near the flap
  4. Leave the rest of the envelope clean

Technique 4: The Decorated Flap

Focus all your decoration on the envelope flap:

  1. Apply washi tape along the edge of the flap
  2. Add stickers that "peek" over when the envelope is sealed
  3. Consider a custom seal sticker over the closure

Dos and Don'ts

Do:

  • Keep addresses clearly visible
  • Use flat decorations (thick embellishments might require extra postage)
  • Coordinate with your letter for a cohesive look
  • Leave the stamp area clear

Don't:

  • Cover the barcode area at the bottom (if present)
  • Use decorations that might fall off in transit
  • Make the address hard to read
  • Overdo it—sometimes simple is beautiful

Extra Credit: The Inside Surprise

Don't forget to decorate inside the envelope too! A sticker on the inside of the flap or a small design element creates a delightful surprise when opened.

The best envelope decoration is one that reflects YOU. Experiment with different techniques and find your signature style!
